About Kallai

Administrative and geographical information about this area, separate from business or office records.

Kallai is one of the most recognisable place names south of central Kozhikode. It lies beside the Kallai River, whose banks became an important centre for timber trading during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The district administration records that only a small number of sawmills remain compared with the former concentration of timber businesses. The British-period Kallai Bridge remains a visible reminder of this riverside history. Beyond the riverfront, Kallai is also an everyday postal and travel reference for surrounding neighbourhoods, including Panniyankara, West Kallai and parts of the coastal belt. The nearest major railway hub is Kozhikode station, while Kallai is also on the road approach towards Beypore. The name may appear as either Kallai or Kallayi in local and official writing.
